As many DumbAgent readers have probably been keeping in touch with recent Economic news, you are most likely familiar with the Clinton/McCain gas tax suspension proposal and, just as likely, aware that it makes very little economic sense to take away a tax that would temporarily increase demand, which in turn, would then raise prices back to the levels before the tax was removed. Only this time, the new prices would be to the detriment of highway infrastructure (since the extra benefit would go the oil companies).
But in case you were looking for coherent ways to defend yourself with your not-so-economically-inclined friends, we recommend a couple sites:
Who will reap the benefits of a gas tax holiday? – by Megan McArdle
Features colorfully illustrated graphs – those good friends of economists.
Open Letter From Economists Opposing the Gas Tax Holiday – by 283 economists and counting
Check out the names of those who signed it. This alone can give you a bounty of economic street cred.
Priming at the Pump
And this one because, as usual, The Economist says it best.

thanks for writing this, friend. it was well needed!
