Books Look at Porn, Movies Don’t

After having posted about how the movie industry should look to the pornography industry in order to keep up with the times, we feel somewhat vindicated to see that the book industry seems to be doing just that. An article on Bloomberg Businessweek (“Trying to Avert a Digital Horror Story”) states how different publishers are finding novel ways of providing access to their titles, from monthly fees for access to all books, to iphone apps.

The same issue of the magazine, interestingly, has an article (“Honest Hollywood, Netflix is your Friend“) how Netflix is trying to keep up with the times by providing streaming access to movies through deals with TV channels. Hollywood’s reaction, however, has been suspicion and distrust. For an industry that looks to make money at each step the movie takes, this is bad news. On the other hand, the industry is changing, and companies must keep up with the times. Surely now we’ve learned that even the biggest companies can fail, right? We’ll see.
