Atlas Shrugged with the Economy

It seems that recessionary times have been boosting the books sales of one author, and one book in particular. According to the Economist, sales of the book “Atlas Shrugged“, by Ayn Rand, have been catapulting in recent times, especially after specific economic events.

There have been 4 recent spikes in Amazon sales of Atlas Shrugged in recent months:

The first was immediately after the Nationalization of North Rock in England, and the first major interest rate cuts in the United States, in September 2007.

The second was a month later, when President Bush’s Subprime Report announced initiatives to coax bankers to help subprime borrowers.

The third was about a year later, in November 2008, when the Treasury Department said it would use a chunk of the $700 Billion TARP funds to bail out nine banks.

The fourth was in January 2009, when Obama released his stimulus plan.

We would also liked to point out that Mad Men, a popular TV show taking place in the 1960′s, debuted in July 2007. The character who is the boss is a huge fan of Ayn Rand, and this might have also aided in awareness and in boosting sales.

All in all though, a great article.
